A Hands On Guide to Using a Tile Cutter

Tile cutters are used to cut ceramic tiles into required shapes and sizes. They mostly work by making a glaze on the surface of tile, and snapping it under pressure. Tile cutters come in many types, from simple manual tools to attachments for power tools. The pressure they apply on the tile varies from model to model.

There are many types of tile cutters that are available in hardware stores. Some of them are tile saws, angle grinders, tile nippers and glass cutters. They can be either fixed as attachments to power tools, or simply used manually to do the job. They have varying types of blades, ranging from blunt to sharp, according the strength, texture and size of the material being cut.

Tile saws are a type of tile cutters that come with adjustable fences for angled and square cuts. They can be attuned to specific angles, for inventive designs. A hose is attached to the tile saw, since the circular diamond blade can cause the surface of the ceramic tile to become so hot that it breaks. The coolant used through the hose is mostly water. The water also keeps the dust down, which isn’t safe to inhale.

Another type of tile cutter is the glass cutter, which is used to cut, as its name suggests, glass. Glass is tricky to shape, since it can shatter into sharp, potentially harmful shards. Therefore, glass cutters work by scoring the surface of the piece, and then gently bending the piece against the scored line until it snaps. Glass cutters come as simple hand tools or larger machines, depending on the requirement. Glass may need to be lubricated before it is scored.

Angle grinders, similar to tile saws, also incorporate a diamond blade to cut over hard surfaces such as vitrified porcelain or stone tiles. Furthermore, their angles can also be accordingly adjusted. They are usually used to make smooth L-shaped cuts, and to carve holes in the ceramic tile. Attached to power tools, they work effectively at making a difficult job easier.

Glass cutters are used to cut in such a way that the glass doesn’t shatter into sharp pieces. Glass cutters core the surface of the material, and gently apply a pressure along the score to make it snap but not splinter. These cutters can be motorized or be simple hand tools. It takes practice to use the former variety properly. The glass must be lubricated for a smoother job.

Tiles cutters are very useful tools in cutting ceramics neatly, without breaking them into pieces. Some types of cutters are easier and safer to use, whereas power tools need more safety precautions and practice. They come various designs, made to suit the needs of the user, whether in homes, commercial buildings, or industries.
